What makes a good leader? (Business Management)

Thesis: A good leader develops emotional quotient around its products in such a way that business becomes a brand. For colleagues,he is someone who has a potential to break through all the worldly powers, myths, and overpowering obstacles to lead a successful project which he is passionate to execute. Cluster of qualities like confidence, diplomacy, passion, patience, perseverance, public speaking etc. makes a full fledged and successful leader.

A famous anecdote by Paulo Coelho suggests “ Each human is unique, each with their own qualities, instincts, forms of pleasure, and desire for adventure” Every idea with its twists, turns and problems is like a mystery and an adventure which a leader solves with his dynamic critical thinking skills to reach to a solution. Creating a brand is not just about finding a solution but also about working with a team, designing a framework, dividing the work and finally executing it . Lot of research, self experience and a will to experiment something new is a mindset which a leader possesses and should possess. To create a triumphant brand a leader shall take care that the final outcome is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound (SMART). The existence of the five SMART leadership goals in a project assures that the main idea behind doing the project is specific, the number of people being benefited is roughly measurable, The benchmarks marked are attainable, executing the project is relevant to company’s growth and country’s GDP and it is time bound to meet the deadlines of every sub-project the brand plans to do.

Leading by doing is the best technique to foster a successful project, when one leads by example, then not just the team members are pushed towards excellence rather, active participation and excellence is demonstrated. Leading by doing is the difference between saying, “You can do this” and “We can do this together.” Here it often becomes momentous for a leader to decide where to take and where not to take the credit. In such situations it is not very ideal to take the whole credit or not take it at all. The leader shall play smartly and to take the credit at all those places where he really showed off his diplomacy and did most of the work, but at the same time it shall be ensured that all the other team members get equal credit for the work because the final brand story is after all everyone’s hard work in a single platter.

Soft skills like teamwork, understanding nature towards colleagues, decision making in tough situations, appreciation and sharing credits with colleagues and effective communicating ability to pitch the brand are also some of the attributes a leader shall possess in every endeavor. Many a time, the leader is able to get to the best idea but faces problem to present it because he cannot manage everything on his own, due lack of teamwork skills and fails to manage and divide equal work and ends up doing the whole project himself which is definitely not as impressive as it was actually thought to be. Communication gap between the team and over diplomacy can bear such consequencesOne brain had put all the efforts to the project but different ideas from different brains could have made the project even more majestic. While we talk about dividing work, the parameter of division and amount of work given to each colleague shall be processed, to make the most leader shall assign the work according to specialisations of a colleague because Plato has rightly said, “Each person is capable of doing one thing well. If he attempts several, he will fail to achieve distinction in any.” Credit shall then be given prudently to all those who contributed along with the leader to appreciate and respect the hardworking teammates. Leader shall assure that he has effective public speaking skills so that he can confidently pitch the brand to other people and make other people understand the dire need approaching it.

Conclusion- Triumphant leaders know the way, rope the way.Good leaders shall possess self-awareness, garner credibility, focus on relationship-building, exhibit humility, empower others, stay authentic, present themselves constant and consistent, become role models and should be fully present.
